The Mollusca Phylum contains about 85,000 different species of animals, all of them invertebrates. About 23% of all identified marine life is part of this phylum. The Mollusca Phylum consists of creatures that are soft-bodied, and have three main body areas consisting of a foot, a visceral mass, and a mantle. The foot secretes mucus in order to propel the animal forward, while visceral mass contains the creature's major organs. The mantle is a layer that protects the visceral mass.Other features of some mollusca members is a radula, which is a tongue like organ used for scraping that may have thousands of microscopic teeth. The phylum includes squids, snails, slugs, octopuses, oysters, clams, and mussels. Mollusca members also can range in their diets from being herbivores, scavengers, and other feeding habits.
